“To be honest, not a huge amount has changed since I first made Sauvignon Blanc in Marlborough,” says Greywacke founder Kevin Judd, who has been making wine in the region since the mid 1980s. His focus is on optimizing canopy management and yields to achieve solid ripeness (and steer away from underripe and green characteristics). With winemaker Richelle Tyney, Judd continues to raise the quality bar for the category. Part of their strategy is to lightly press the grapes to yield a modest volume of best-quality juice, the majority fermented in stainless steel tanks with cultured yeast, with a portion of the juice spontaneously fermenting with indigenous yeast in old oak barrels before it’s all blended together.
Tasting Note
Distinctive, succulent and wonderfully complex, offering stone fruit flavors on a rich, smooth and mouthwateringly juicy frame, with notes of honeysuckle, honey-preserved ginger, creamy lemon curd, ripe mango and flowers. Hints of spices linger on the long, expressive finish. Drink now.—MaryAnn Worobiec
