Fattoria dei Barbi Brunello di Montalcino Riserva 2016

A historic Montalcino estate, Fattoria dei Barbi was one of the 25 producers of Brunello when the region achieved DOC status in 1967. Located on a plateau to the southeast of the town of Montalcino, this large estate (865 acres) has been producing Brunello since 1892. Under current owner Stefano Cinelli Colombini’s management since 1981, the vineyards have increased from 54 to 212 acres. Vigna del Fiore is the estate’s best site, the source of its single-vineyard label and some Sangiovese for the riserva. Aged in 225-liter to 1,500-liter barrels and large casks for a total of three years, the riserva is a selection of the best casks with aging potential.

Tasting Note

Though vibrant and expressing cherry, currant, herb and mineral flavors, this is tannic and locked up for now. Leans to the elegant side, with a dense layer of dusty tannins guarding the finish. Be patient. Best from 2026 through 2043. 3,000 cases made.—Bruce Sanderson
