Recently Rated Château Canon-La Gaffelière Wines
On Bordeaux’s Right Bank, 2009 was also a classic vintage. Early barrel tastings of the young 2011 and 2012 wines suggest Canon-La Gaffelière still made outstanding wines in those less consistent vintages. (Barrel-rated wines are re-evaluated in our blind tastings once they are bottled; look for future reviews.)
Château Canon-La Gaffelière St.-Emilion 2012
Barrel Tasting Score Range: 90-93 points
Release Price: $NA
Bright and pure, with mingling notes of plum pit, black cherry preserves and steeped currant fruit, all lined with red licorice and well-integrated spice. Shows ample grip, but the tannins are well-buried. Not big, this relies more on accessibility and balance overall.—James Molesworth

Château Canon-La Gaffelière St.-Emilion 2011
Barrel Tasting Score Range: 90-93 points
Release Price: $NA
Exhibits very pretty red currant, violet and red licorice notes, with a sleek, mineral-tinged finish. This is also sneakily long, relying more on purity than power. This could move up if it puts on weight.—JM

Château Canon-La Gaffelière St.-Emilion 2009
Score: 96 points
Release Price: $95
Top 100 of 2012, Rank: 23
Special Designation: Highly Recommended
This is well-cloaked for now in roasted vanilla and espresso notes, but there’s ample, fleshy fig sauce and mulled blackberry fruit in reserve. The long finish sports a melted licorice snap feel. Dense, but beautifully polished and pure. For the cellar. Best from 2015 through 2030. 5,140 cases made.—JM
