Jean-Paul Daumen took the reins of this family domaine from his father in 1992 and now is joined by his own son, Antoine. In the northeast corner of Châteauneuf-du-Pape, this biodynamically farmed estate totals 54 contiguous (rare in the appellation) acres of vines. In 2015, Daumen made a philosophical shift, choosing to base his cuvées on specific terroirs rather than on vine age. Les Trois Sources comes from the domaine’s sandy soil parcels, which impart a silky elegance to the typically powerful fruit profile of Grenache, the lead variety. The wine also contains Syrah, Counoise, Cinsault, Mourvèdre and others. Vieille Julienne’s wines are some of the longest-lived in the appellation.
Tasting Note
A lush, ripe style, with açaí berry, blueberry and plum reduction notes giving this a slightly exotic bent, while singed bay leaf, worn leather and warm tar accents keep this grounded in a slightly old-school way. Displays ample heft, yet energy ripples through the finish, accompanied by lingering garrigue and tobacco echoes. Best from 2022 through 2040. 500 cases imported.—James Molesworth
